Recently, I booked a last minute holiday to Corfu. I finally settled on Corfu the morning before we had to leave, which meant that there wasn’t much time investigate wheelchair accessible hotels. I narrowed it down to two– but none of the booking sites had any details on wheelchair access for either. From a Google search, as well as filtering through travel reviews for the mention of the word “wheelchair”, I ascertained that one the hotels probably had adapted rooms and lifts. I decided to go ahead and book.
It actually turned out that the hotel was amazing and the accessible hotel room was probably one of the best I’ve stayed in. But it just got me thinking how frustrating it is to find any accessible travel information. Based on the information on the booking sites I would have discarded a hotel that turned out to be perfect. The opposite happens too. I’ve checked into my accessible room to find that the grab rails are too far from the toilet to be any of use or I can’t reach the taps for the sink.
So that’s that idea behind this website – a place specifically dedicated to accessible travel. Somewhere that people can share their experience of how accessible somewhere really is, not just whether it meets the criteria to tick a box on an “available facilities” checklist. I’m a wheelchair user, so initially this website has more information focused on mobility – but as it grows I’m hoping that it will provide useful travel information to anyone with an accessibility need.
Please add your travel reviews on the website, if the hotel all the activity isn’t listed yet you can add it. If you have any ideas or suggestions about anything related to accessible travel that would be useful, please get in touch.
